BSR’s HERproject: Tackling Violence Against Women

Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), a global nonprofit organization has recently launched its HERproject in Bangladesh, which is a collaborative initiative that strives to empower low-income women working in global supply chains through workplace programs promoting health, financial inclusion, gender equality and tackling violence against women.
Since its inception in 2007, the project had brought together global brands, their suppliers and local NGOs to 420 workplaces across 14 countries, including Bangladesh, and had implemented training and partnerships to empower women labors.
HERrespect is one of the three pillars of HERproject which focuses on gender relations and  tackles violence against women by addressing the root causes of violence in the workplace.

Many female workers in global supply chains experience high levels of harassment and violence, both in the workplace and in their personal relationships. This violence, which can be economic, emotional, physical, or sexual, deprives women of their basic human rights and compromises their well-being. In addition, an increasing amount of evidence shows that when the well-being of workers suffers, businesses and economies are negatively impacted.

Violence against women is bad for business and there is a high cost to inaction.
