Bangladesh: Reducing Maternal Mortality

Dhaka, a growing city of 12 million has one-third of its population living in urban slums with dire poverty. Women in these areas often lack access to safe maternal medical care.

BRAC, with funding from Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, have been working to reduce maternal deaths in Bangladesh through reaching out to women in need of prenatal care.

“People who are working in maternal health don’t expect women [sic] will be dying from viral Hepatitis E, and that’s very common in our urban slums,” says Kaosar Afsana, Associate Director of Health, Nutrition and Population.
