Empowerment versus Violence

In an opinion piece, Nahela Nowshin contemplates on the recent event of gruesome violence inflicted on a woman named Shukhi by her husband and in-laws. According to her, Shukhi’s case is “one of many incidents of dowry-related violence that pervades Bangladeshi society and usually goes unreported.” Nowshin argues that the number of such violence is so high that it has become “the norm rather than the exception.” She invites attention to the fact that the concept of women’s empowerment goes in vain when gender-based violence take place and state fails to take legal action against the perpetrators.
