Physical Violence by Husbands in Bangladesh

In both, rural and urban areas of Bangladesh, there is a high prevalence of lifetime physical spousal violence against women. Among these abused women, more than half of them are silent about their experience. High acceptance of violence, stigma and fear of greater harm are the core reasons behind this silence. Most of these abused women never received any help from others. Only few of them ever sought help from institutional sources. Even they approached these sources only when they could not endure anymore or the violence became life threatening or children were at risk. Though providing appropriate services is very much necessary, it is also important to foster the use of such services and to help women overcome the barriers for accessing these services.
