Sex-selective Abortions in South Asia

In South Asian countries, most of the people prefer to have a son than daughter. In these societies, women are very less respected and have low social status. Despite of having very strict policy against sex-selective abortion, these countries still have high rate of such incidents. Sex-selective abortion is a severe public health issue as it increases maternal mortality. The main factors behind sex-selective abortion are cultural practices, irrational national population policies and unethical use of technology. In order to stop such abortion, society’s perception regarding women need to be changed. They need to have better health, education and economic participation. Behavioral change is a must need for bringing in these changes.

This study reflects the current situation of sex-selective abortion, the laws and the factors contributing to its occurrence within South Asian countries.
