About the organisation

SERAC-Bangladesh is an youth led NGO with special consultative status with the UNECOSOC, initiated in 1991 and registered in 1993 with legal existence from the Ministry of Social Welfare, Ministry of Youth & Sports, and the NGO Affair’s Bureau under the Prime Minister’s Office, Bangladesh. The mission is to establish a human rights oriented environment that provides space for achievable development through access to education, health, livelihood, policy support for women, children and youth, and vulnerable communities.

SERAC-Bangladesh has direct programs in 28 districts in the country operating with diverse program units- Human rights & Social Change, Health & SRHR, Education,
Youth Development, and Sustainable Urban Development with an aim to promote the socioeconomic status and living standards of the poor and vulnerable communities,
especially youth, women and children through their capacity building, awareness raising, group formation and intervening with felt need based problem solving programs by adopting innovative ideas and strategic communication. The organization is a catalyst and leading space for young people in Bangladesh, and currently engaging more than 5000 volunteers across the country through diverse programs, including sexual and reproductive health and rights advocacy.

SERAC is nationally and globally recognized as a youth led NGO with commitment to bring change, and make better access for young people around SRHR, and other health needs. SERAC-Bangladesh mobilized more than 50000 young people in 2015 in the country to raise community level awareness on sustainable development goals. With that, SERAC was officially invited by the President of the UN General Assembly to join the 70th UN General Assembly and Sustainable Development Summit in New York. It has been represented at various youth centered spaces across globe, including Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition, PMNCH AYC, Women Deliver, ICFP, ICAAP, Girls Not Brides and so on.

Over the past decades it has worked with a number of international agencies including Women Deliver, International Youth Alliance for Family Planning (IYAFP), International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), Ipas, AmplifyChange, UNFPA, Partners in Population and Development, ARROW, BRAC, Plan International, World
Vision, UN-Habitat, and gained expertise of engaging youths with national, regional, and international advocacy, capacity strengthening spaces. To note, SERAC co-hosted the world’s first national youth conference on family planning in Bangladesh with IYAFP in 2016 and institutionalized the event through 2017, and planning the third one this year. This has become country’s top space for youth engagement with government and SRHR stakeholders.

SERAC-Bangladesh’s program unit is led by experts and young professionals with 15
years of practical experience on youth engagement, sexual and reproductive health and
rights, gender based violence prevention, and advocacy program designing,
implementation, and evaluation.

Our main strategic focus is to build capacity of young people to engage and advocate with Government and CSOs as key actors in the implementation of sustainable
development goals 3 & 5 to ensure health and gender equality in Bangladesh. SERAC-Bangladesh is also the host organization of the International Youth Alliance
for Family Planning (IYAFP) in Bangladesh. We are a pro-choice organization, and we support young people’s access to independent decision making over own body and health including safe abortion services with protection from stigma, and family planning methods & quality contraceptive commodities at affordable price.

In addition to that, SERAC-Bangladesh in partnership with IYAFP, initiated the first ever youth conference on family planning to create advocacy spaces for youth. Every year hundreds of youth leaders, policy and decision makers, and SRHR experts join this conference, to review commitments to ensure access to family planning information, services and commodities for youth in Bangladesh.
