Global Symposium to Spotlight Climate Justice, SRHR, and Gender Equality

The world is at a critical juncture where the climate crisis, demographic shifts, and deep-rooted gender inequalities are intersecting more visibly than ever. Recognising this urgent reality, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in collaboration with the Government of Brazil and the COP30 Presidency, is convening the 2025 Global Symposium on Climate Justice and Impacted Populations. Under the theme “Rights in a Changing Climate: Sexual and Reproductive Health and Gender Equality”, the four-day hybrid event will take place in Brasília, Brazil, from 28 to 31 July 2025.

Building on three decades since the landmark International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, the Symposium aims to galvanise global action to address how climate change disproportionately affects the health, rights, and resilience of the world’s most vulnerable communities — especially women, girls, and young people. Rising global temperatures, intensifying natural disasters, and deepening environmental crises continue to exacerbate sexual and reproductive health challenges and increase the risks of gender-based violence and harmful practices.

The event aims to highlight a rich tapestry of dialogues and collaborations, beginning with a high-level opening ceremony highlighting the links between the ICPD Programme of Action and urgent climate action. Sessions will unpack critical evidence and practical pathways — from strengthening health systems under climate stress to addressing the unique vulnerabilities of marginalised populations such as indigenous communities, youth, migrants, and the urban poor.

Key themes include feminist climate justice, nature-based solutions, social protection, and innovative financing for integrated climate and SRHR programmes. Dedicated youth-led spaces, including a ‘Youth Climate Justice Lab’, will ensure that young voices shape intergenerational solutions and bold calls to action.

The Symposium is expected to culminate in concrete recommendations and a global Call to Action, feeding directly into the Gender Action Plan for COP30. Participants, including – policymakers, academics, indigenous leaders, climate finance experts, and grassroots activists, will work towards ensuring that sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), gender equality, and the prevention of gender-based violence remain central to climate resilience efforts worldwide.

By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the Symposium seeks not only to surface the challenges and gaps but also to ignite collective ambition, mobilise new partnerships, and unlock climate financing streams that leave no one behind.

We proudly share that Jannatul Munia, Knowledge Management Expert (KME) at Share-Net Bangladesh (SNBD) and Director of Strategy at RedOrange Communications, has been invited to represent and contribute her insights to this global dialogue, amplifying voices from Bangladesh and the region at this critical intersection of climate justice and gender equality.
