NGO Forum for Public Health
About the organisation
NGO Forum for Public Health is a national rights-based organization in Bangladesh dedicated to improving the health, well-being and livelihoods of marginalized communities, especially in underserved and hard-to-reach areas. Established in 1982, NGO Forum has implemented over 300 projects, impacting more than 50 million lives. The organization focuses on a broad spectrum of interventions including Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), health, nutrition, gender equality, governance, disaster risk reduction, climate resilience and humanitarian response.
NGO Forum is registered with the Department of Social Services and the NGO Affairs Bureau of Bangladesh and is member of national and international networks namely Bangladesh Environment Network, Menstrual Health and Hygiene Platform, Bangladesh Water Integrity Network, Climate Action Network South Asia, International Water Association, Global Water Partnership, Network of WASH Networks, Climate and Protracted Crisis Response Alliance, Citizen’s Platform for SDGs, Right to Food Bangladesh, Freshwater Action Network South Asia, Sustainable Sanitation Alliance, etc.
Key Areas of Work:
- WASH Leadership and Innovation: NGO Forum initiates community-managed water and sanitation programs in Bangladesh introducing the Community-managed WatSan Program approach. This approach mobilized local communities through Village Development Committees (VDCs) and Village Sanitation Centers (VSCs), accelerating nationwide sanitation coverage. Women were at the forefront as entrepreneurs and change agents, promoting hygiene and sanitation practices.
- Livelihood Development and Economic Empowerment: NGO Forum promotes inclusive livelihood opportunities for women, youth and vulnerable groups to improve economic independence and decision-making capabilities. The programs focus on skill-building, entrepreneurship and capacity development to empower to become self-reliant and resilient.
- Gender Equality and Social Inclusion: NGO Forum emphasizes the empowerment of women and marginalized communities. Women are positioned at the center of water management, livelihood programs, and leadership initiatives.
- Advocacy, Networking, and Capacity Building: NGO Forum engages actively in policy advocacy, campaigns, and sectoral networks, ensuring alignment with government strategies and international standards.
- Humanitarian Response and Resilience Building: NGO Forum works in emergency response, notably during the Rohingya refugee crisis since 2017. Its interventions in refugee camps have focused on:
- Livelihood creation and income generation for refugee women.
- Safe water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.
- Disaster risk reduction and climate-resilient community programs.
