Plights of the Trafficked Rohingya Women

The recent series of reports on human trafficking by sea in the Southeast Asian region is leading to further discoveries of inhumane conditions of the victims, especially women.

Chris Lewa, coordinator of The Arakan Project, an advocacy group that monitors Rohingya Refugee Situation and maritime movements in Bangladesh, Thailand and Malaysia, comments how despite being risky, refugees opt for trafficking considering the travel cheaper but end up in paying the traffickers a huge amount of money.

Female Rohingya victims has been reported of being subject to gang rapes and sexual slavery by the traffickers.
