Building a network to stop child trafficking

Every year, millions of people are trafficked out of Bangladesh in illegal ways, majority of them, women and children.

Child trafficking is a big problem in countries like Bangladesh where people are desperately seeking a chance of a better of life outside the country. The women and young girls are subjected to sexual exploitation, prostitution whereas the boys and men are forced into labour or forced begging.

Bangladesh National Woman Lawyers Association (BNWLA) organized a conference on Networking to Combat Child Trafficking on November 20, 2016.

The conference was organized under the “Prevention of Child Trafficking through Strengthening Community and Networking” (PCTSCN) project by the ATSEC members.

Discussion in the conference emerged some key areas to work on:

  1. National and regional networks against trafficking in children are essential and hold a special role in combating trafficking.
  2. Reform in this end is very slow among SAARC countries, except between India and Bangladesh, where there has been many exemplary steps taken from extradition treaty to speedy repatriation of trafficked children.
  3. National Legal Instruments are found to be much more progressive than Regional Instruments.
  4. Both boys and girls are trafficked in South Asia and the trend in trafficking in children is going upward.

The conference has also brought forth some solutions to these problems.
