Women empowerment a prerequisite to address HIV/ AIDS epidemic

Women and girls suffer unequal burden of HIV/AIDS due to existing gender inequalities. The paper examines the causes behind them and serves as an eye opener for the policy makers and professionals alike. Gender inequality, sexual abuse and violence, social stigma, inability to decision making power, economic dependency and men’s sexual power and privilege over women are important causes which contribute to this inequality. This article helps to contextualize HIV/ AIDS prevention efforts through a wider lens of gender disparity, which is essential for sustainable change.
