Twenty underprivileged girls receive sewing machines

It is a common scenario in Bangladesh where young girls drop out of school and are married off because of the nuisance of eve teasing.

As a part of the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence” campaign, Zonta Club of Dhaka IV distributed free sewing machines to 20 underprivileged girls who were students of class VI to VIII after a three month long training program. The officials of the Zonta Club of  Dhaka IV told The Daily Star that they conduct similar training programs for underprivileged girls every year.

According to Naushi Maurukh, these training programs were initiated a few years ago to empower underprivileged girls. However, she also mentioned that the number of girls they can accommodate depends on the availability of funds.

Zonta International is a US-based organisation that was founded in 1919, and has been working in 60 countries with the mission of advancing the status of women.
